Baku State University — what is taught, how the program progresses, what graduates become
The Translation (Persian) program at Baku State University (BSU) is offered within the Faculty of Oriental Studies (departments of Arabic philology, Iranian philology, Turkic philology, and Far Eastern languages and literature). It trains translators and interpreters in Persian-Azerbaijani written and oral translation; border trade with Iran and diplomacy are areas of employment for graduates.
Baku State University (BSU), founded in 1919 by decision of the Parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, is the country's first and oldest university: 16 faculties, 127 departments, about 26,000 students, 1,500 faculty members and nearly 1,000 international students. Ranked 688th in the QS World University Rankings 2026, it is first in Azerbaijan and the leader in the South Caucasus; it received 5 stars in the QS Stars audit. Nobel laureate physicist Lev Landau and Azerbaijan's founding leader Heydar Aliyev studied at this university. It has cooperation agreements with Middle East Technical University (METU), Moscow State, Indiana and Vienna universities.
No entrance exam score is required for admission; applicants submit an application letter (stating the department and language of instruction), an apostilled high school diploma and transcript with a notarized Azerbaijani translation, a medical report (HIV, Hepatitis B and C) and a passport valid for at least 1.5 years. The program lasts 4 years (8 semesters, 240 ECTS) and ends with a bachelor's (bakalavr) diploma; the language of instruction is Azerbaijani, and Russian and English groups also open in many departments. Students whose language level is not sufficient first enter a 1-year preparatory class. The Department for Work with Foreign Students, established in 2019, supports the visa, residence permit and adaptation processes.
