Hazar University — what is taught, how the program progresses, what graduates become

The Khazar University Translation (by language) program is offered within the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (teacher training, philology, psychology, international relations and political science; Psychology Research Center and Dictionary and Encyclopedia Center). It trains written and oral translators with a focus on English-Azerbaijani; Russian and other language pairs are elective.

Khazar University, founded on 18 March 1991 by Prof. Hamlet Isakhanli, is Azerbaijan's first private university and, as one of the first private universities in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia, brought Western-style, research-oriented higher education to the country. Instruction is mainly in English; it has about 2,500 students and 250 academic staff, and students come from more than 30 countries. It spans more than 26 hectares in 13 buildings, with the Neftchilar and city-center campuses in Baku, the Buzovna conference center and regional campuses in Sumgayit and Ganja; it has faculties of Science and Engineering, Economics and Management, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, and Hasvet Veterinary Medicine, as well as two graduate schools. It is in the 951-1000 band of the QS World University Rankings 2026. It cooperates with more than 100 foreign universities and offers Erasmus+, Mevlana and bilateral exchange programs as well as dual diploma options. The campus has 29 research centers, including theoretical physics, nanomaterials, astrophysics and psychology, the Dictionary and Encyclopedia Center founded in 1996, a library and information center, 4 museums and a student dormitory; the university also runs K-12 Dunya Schools in Baku, Sumgayit and Ganja.

No entrance exam score is required for admission; applicants apply with a high school diploma, a transcript and proof of English proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL or the university's own test). The program lasts 4 years (8 semesters, 240 ECTS) and leads to a bachelor's (bakalavr) degree; students whose English level is insufficient are placed in the university's English preparatory program.
