📚 What is the Translation/interpretation (by languages) program like?

Nakhchivan State University — what is taught, how the program progresses, what graduates become

The Translation (by language) program at Nakhchivan State University (NSU) is offered within the Faculty of Foreign Languages. It trains translators and interpreters in written and oral translation between Azerbaijani and English, Russian, German or French; NSU also offers a master's in Simultaneous Interpreting (English).

Nakhchivan State University (NSU) is the state university of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, on the border with Turkey, founded in 1967 and granted university status in 1990: 10 faculties, 43 departments, 528 faculty members, about 12,000 students and a 108-hectare "University City" campus. It is the university most preferred by Turkish students in Azerbaijan: as of December 2025, more than 1,200 of its 1,693 international students are Turkish citizens. Nakhchivan is a few hours by road from Iğdır and Kars; the closeness of Turkish and Azerbaijani and the city's safe, calm character are the main reasons Turkish families choose it. It takes part in the Erasmus Mundus and TEMPUS programs and runs a dual diploma program with Hungary; 25 million manats have been allocated for a new 1,000-bed dormitory complex.

No entrance exam score is required for admission; applicants apply with a high school diploma and transcript. The program lasts 4 years (8 semesters, 240 ECTS) and ends with a bachelor's (bakalavr) diploma. The language of instruction is Azerbaijani, and English-language groups open in some departments. Students whose language level is not sufficient are enrolled in the 1-year preparatory course of the Foreign Students and Preparatory Center; alongside Azerbaijani, the course covers the core courses of the chosen department, and students who pass the end-of-year exam start the 1st year.
