The Political Science program at Sumgayit State University (SDU) is offered within the Faculty of History and Geography (history, geography, political science, sociology, social work). It provides training in political theory, comparative politics and public policy.
Sumgayit State University (SSU) was founded in 1962 as the Sumgayit branch of the Azerbaijan Institute of Oil and Chemistry and became an independent state university on 13 June 2000 by decision of Heydar Aliyev. Since Sumgayit, 30 km from Baku, is Azerbaijan's chemical and industrial center, the university works closely with SOCAR Polymer, the Sumgayit Chemical Industrial Park and the Technology Park. It has about 8,000 students in 7 faculties (Engineering; Chemistry and Biology; Physics and Electrical Energy; Mathematics; Economics and Management; History and Geography; Philology); instruction is in Azerbaijani and Russian, and in English in some programs. It is ranked 483rd in the QS European University Rankings 2025; it is a member of the Caucasus University Association and cooperates with Istanbul Technical University and the universities of Sorbonne and Nice. The campus has 3 academic buildings, a library, a computer center, a sports complex and two student dormitories; a new 248-bed dormitory opened in 2026. Annual fees are among the most affordable in Azerbaijan, and the cost of living in Sumgayit is lower than in Baku.
No entrance exam score is required for admission; applicants apply with a high school diploma and transcript. The program lasts 4 years (8 semesters, 240 ECTS) and leads to a bachelor's (bakalavr) degree; teaching is offered in Azerbaijani or Russian groups. Students whose language level is insufficient are placed in a 6-month or 1-year preparatory course.

The first 2 years consist of core subject courses; the 3rd and 4th years include specialization courses, laboratory work, an internship and a graduation thesis.
