PhD programs of the Faculty of Geography at Baku State University (BSU): research in physical geography, geomorphology, climate, hydrology, human geography and GIS.
Baku State University (BDU), founded in 1919, is Azerbaijan's first university: 16 faculties, 127 departments, 197 master's and 70 PhD specializations, more than 30 research laboratories, and research institutes of Applied Mathematics, Theoretical Physics, Genetics and Nanotechnology. It is ranked 688th in the QS World University Rankings 2026, first in Azerbaijan and the leader in the South Caucasus; it cooperates with METU, Moscow State, Indiana and Vienna universities.
Admission requires a master's degree and a research proposal; the program lasts 3 years (6 semesters) and leads to the "fəlsəfə doktoru" (PhD) degree upon defense of a doctoral thesis written under the supervision of an advisor. The language of instruction and of the thesis can be English, Azerbaijani or Russian. This program is a faculty umbrella: applicants choose one of the faculty's doctoral specializations when applying.

The first year covers doctoral courses and the foreign language and philosophy exams (candidate minimum exams); the 2nd and 3rd years are devoted to research, publications (at least 2 articles) and the thesis defense.
