Ganja State University — what is taught, how the program progresses, what graduates become
The Translation (in various languages) program at Ganja State University (GSU) is offered within the Faculty of Foreign Languages. It trains translators and interpreters, mainly in English-Azerbaijani, with German and French options.
Ganja State University (GDU) was founded in 1938 as a two-year Teachers' Institute, was renamed Hasan Bey Zardabi Pedagogical Institute in 1943 and Ganja State Pedagogical Institute in 1989, and became a state university by decree of Heydar Aliyev in 2000. Ganja, Azerbaijan's second-largest city and the birthplace of Nizami Ganjavi, is 360 km from Baku and closer to the Turkish border than Baku is. In 8 faculties (Mathematics and Informatics; Physics and Technical Sciences; Chemistry and Biology; Philology; History and Geography; Foreign Languages; Pedagogy; Economics and Management) it has 5,237 students and 542 academic staff, 20 of them professors. The campus has 6 teaching buildings, a library, a sports hall, student dormitories and a computer center with a branch of the Cisco Networking Academy. It is a member of the Caucasus University Association and runs Mevlana exchanges with universities in Türkiye. Its annual fee (about $589) is the lowest university fee in Azerbaijan, and the cost of living in Ganja is about half that of Baku.
No entrance exam score is required for admission; applicants apply with a high school diploma and transcript. The program lasts 4 years (8 semesters, 240 ECTS) and ends with a bachelor's (bakalavr) diploma; instruction is in Azerbaijani. Students whose language level is not sufficient are enrolled in a 1-year preparatory course.
